Laura Schemitsch earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa in 2019 with specializations in Public Law and Law and Social Justice. Prior to studying law, she earned her Bachelor of Arts with Honours from McMaster University, majoring in History and a Master of Arts from Queen’s University in Art History. She is the author of several medical journal articles and most recently published a law op-ed in the Huffington Post.
While attending law school, Laura completed internships with the Just Governance Group and the Ticket Defence Program. She found her passion for immigration and refugee law in first year and has been an active member of Capital Rainbow Refuge, a private sponsorship group that brings LGBTQ+ refugees to Ottawa, since 2017.
Laura believes in the importance of integrating wellness into the legal profession. She participated in two mindfulness courses in Ottawa and used this knowledge to inform her academic and wellness mentorship for fellow law students as a peer mentor and tutor during her upper years.
Laura is thrilled to be articling at Gerami Law PC and is very happy to be part of an amazing team. When Laura is not working she is probably exploring the outdoors, dancing or finding a new way to fuel her creative side. She loves travelling and before relocating to Ottawa she lived and worked in Sydney, Australia and Whistler, British Columbia.
